What do the numbers on my PAN Card mean?

All PAN cards carry a 10 character alphanumeric code, which is unique to you. The card itself is credit card sized and laminated. PAN cards are issued to individuals and entities such as charities or businesses and once issued, don’t change.

A typical PAN number would be something like ADFPS8324S. The first three characters are always letters of the alphabet and run from AAA to ZZZ. There is no particular meaning to these letters. The fourth character is usually P for an individual, but would be F on a firm’s PAN card, T for a trust or C for a company. The next letter is the first letter of the holder’s surname. This is always followed by 4 digits running from 0000 to 9999 and again, there is no meaning to these numbers. The last character is a letter of the alphabet which serves as a check digit.
