What documents do I need to apply for my PAN card?

You should only apply for a new PAN card when you haven’t had one allocated to you already. If you’ve lost your PAN card or it’s been issued with a mistake on it, then ask for a duplicate or replacement rather than going through the process to apply for a new one. It’s illegal to have more than one PAN card.

The process for applying for PAN is straightforward.

  • Fill in the form online – 49A for Indian residents, 49AA for people from other countries.
  • Pay the required fee.
  • Print the form off, sign it, and attach your photos.
  • Send it in the post with your supporting documents.

Secure or tracked postage is recommended as the documents you need to send are important. There is a wide range of supporting documents which you can use to verify your identity and apply for your PAN. These include:

  • Passport
  • Electoral identity card
  • Driver’s licence
  • Ration card
  • Formally certified identity documents
  • AADHAAR card
  • Pensioner card.

You will also need to send documents to verify your address. These include:

  • Utility bill
  • Driving licence
  • Bank statement
  • Passport
  • Credit card statement
  • Employer certificate
  • Property registration document
